New Westminster Pier Park is a restored 9.5-acre brown field site built over water and land along the Fraser River. It’s helping to spur revitalization in the Whalley area of Surrey by giving residents a destination around which to recreate community connection. In addition to providing space for public events and music festivals, the park features several play spaces. Just more than one acre of riparian buffer zone was returned to native habitat. British Columbia industry members were quick to point out that one of the biggest reasons for New Westminster Pier Park’s success has been that the city has done a great job with maintenance.
